I pay my respects to the Wurundjeri Elders, past, present and emerging, and acknowledge that this land was never ceded. &nbsp;I also acknowledge the Noongar Peoples on whose land the limestone at the centre of this material process is quarried and slaked. Sarah Tomasetti is a specialist in medieval material technologies such as fresco, encaustic, sgraffito and stucco lucido, holding a technical qualification from Laboratorio Tintori in Prato, Italy. Her doctoral research examines how working with the matter-energy of slaked lime that requires the slow sensing of moisture, temperature and molecular interaction, can constitute a correspondence and entanglement with the living world through making. Recent works explore diverse mountain imaginaries, examining how cultural narratives inflect the ways imagine, traverse, worship and destroy mountainous regions, and how engaging ancient material agencies through art practice can re-sensitise relations with the more than human world.&nbsp; Sarah is a lecturer in Fine Art at RMIT University and currently Co-lead of Painting. Observing the tapu status of the mountain in Māori lore, I acknowledge the importance of the ancestral mountain Tititea, together with Aoraki, and stand in support of the Tino rangatiratanga of their body of work is drawn from a period spent watching the autumn weather and light sweep across the alpine landscape, courtesy of the Kenneth Myer Artist Residency on the South Island of Aotearoa/New Zealand. In the studio, the material at the heart of fresco making is slaked lime, itself born of a limestone landscape at one with water, with its origins in the ancient seabed. Mixed with an aggregate such as sand or marble dust, it becomes sedimentary over the 24-hour period of curing, full of tiny stone like fissures that echo the bedrock of the mountain. Brushed onto a fresco surface, slaked lime becomes an atmospheric echo of the weather world; mixed with vermillion pigment it’s the shy dawn light or tinted with azurite and carbon it might resemble a descending snowstorm. The fresco plaster is laid over washed muslin which enables removal from the wall after curing – together these form a fresco skin. The addition of encaustic wax renders the slaked lime transparent whilst also protecting the delicate patterns that give each skin it’s character. Pigments added to the fresco skins reflect the intense reds and greens of the vegetation found in the icy tarns, and produce their own sedimentary patterning, such as long curved lines for raw umber or radiating lines for chromium oxide.&nbsp; Skins cut into the shape of wayfinding arrows mark movements in a pathless landscape. These were the first things I made whilst on residency after the departure of our mountain guide and laying them out became a way to grow familiarity with the topography through a slow material connection to the ground. The paintings arise at the intersection of the unpredictable materiality of fresco making, and a commitment to close observation of the structure of the mountain range as captured in sequences of photographs and video shot at different times of day. No part of the form is invented, rather I am interested in finding strangeness within the rhythmic rise and fall of the earth’s formation over deep time. The length of the residency and the position of Whare Kea Chalet provided an unprecedented opportunity to observe the Southern Alps transforming through the shapeshifting of water at altitude, in other words, the sacred snowfall. Wayfinders&nbsp; The stone skin moved out of the studio in the form of metaphoric way finders situated in the landscape during an artist residency in New Zealand, a meditation on the loss of the cryosphere and the consequent experience of losing one’s way. The way finders meander, point towards each other or swirl in arcs towards an empty centre like a flock. I cut the wayfinding arrows from fresco skins as a way of navigating the strangeness of a new landscape through making a material connection to the ground.&nbsp; Out walking, I placed them in patches of snow, along frozen tarns and gullies, a small visual intervention to grow familiarity with the topography through slow looking. &nbsp; Each stain is drawn from the colour of the sky, stone, or vegetation recorded at different times of the day and night. The various sizes recede, echoing the elastic nature of distance in the mountains or the movement of wind barbs on a meteorological chart. The rhythmic making of the arrows created a relationship between the present, my childhood visiting Switzerland, and a deeper ancestral past, in which my forebears created frescoed wayfaring shrines along high-altitude paths, where offerings could be made to ensure safe passage. Laid out in the sun, rapid melting confined the way finders to an ever-diminishing patch of snow moving our awareness towards disintegration and change, away from an idea of the singularly transcendent towards an experience of the immanence of the world, a “matter-flow” (Ingold 2012). On our last night at the chalet, I laid them out on the outside table under gently falling snow and in the morning, they were frozen stiff and could be laid into grooves made with an egg slice in the snow.&nbsp; We dug them out from below and arranged them into a playful topography – these images became emblematic of the time at Whare Kea Chalet and the sense of renewal brought by the rapidly transforming landscape. Whare Kea works in progress This series is evolving into two distinct bodies of work; one white and atmospheric in response to the snows coming in, and the second richly coloured in response to both the geology and vegetation of the area.&nbsp; With the latter series single pigments are mixed into the slaked lime render and then encaustic wax is applied to the fresco skin once removed from the wall, to reveal the craquelure within, which alters its quality according to the pigment used. By layering the skins I aim to bring forward the intense red and green of tiny plants in the tarns, the grey brown variations of stone, the golden tussock at dawn and the cool dark sky at night. &nbsp;The fresco collages are quick notations released from the constraints of representation. that emerges in the curing process when the lime-based render re-sequesters the carbon that was driven off during slaking.&nbsp; In this sense the stone skin evokes the idea of breathing, along with the continual movement of moisture through the wall.&nbsp; Swathes of umber dyed muslin evoke the suspended clay of the upside-down river, and the accretion of grit on the linen circle beneath references both the history of landscape painting and the continual movement of silt in the formation and disintegration of land and water.&nbsp; When the grit is collected and reground into the body of the new fresco skin, the cycle will begin again. The hexagonal form of the installation recalls the radial basalt columns that typify the geological formation local to the area. Thus, the topographical imagery is produced through a series of physical engagements with the materiality of the fresco skin, other than the customary brushing of marks.&nbsp; The cloth emerging at the base of each banner is marked with the various residues of these engagements, and affords removal from the wall that provide&nbsp;d both support and absorption throughout the curing.&nbsp; The range depicted is a small section of the vast range that can be seen from a small stone temple on a hill in the north of Uttarakhand in India. – Sarah Tomasetti, 2023
